What is alanine aminotransferase:

ALT is a one type of enzyme that found in liver. Enzymes help the liver build and break down proteins. When ALT level is increase it causes liver damage. So alanine aminotransferase test measure the amount of ALT in the blood. This test is also known as the SGPT test for Serum Glutamate-pyruvate Transaminase

Why it is done:
  • This test is useful to find out the reason for liver damage and evaluate the liver diseases
  • Test is performed for hepatitis, Gallbladder inflammation, Jaundices
  • Doctor will order for this test when you feel weakness, loss of appetite, dark urine
  • This test is useful for finding the reason for nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
  • This test give specific information about liver diseases to doctor
Preparations for test:
  • Tell the doctor if you have any kind of allergy or you are taking any medicines or some kind of herbs before test
  • Tell doctor if you are pregnant
How it is done:
  • Blood sample is needed for this test
  • Medical healthcare warp elastic band around your upper arm to stop blood flow
  • Then clean the needle site with alcohol and insert needle into vein to take blood sample
  • After taking blood sample he or she withdraw needle from the vein and remove elastic band from the arm
  • Then put a gauze pad or cotton ball over the needle site and apply bandage over there
